Fall Albums: The Wonder Years – Suburbia

Music Sean Gonzalez November 6, 2014

For those people turning to pop-punk to help cope with this massive weather change here is album two of my album write ups for this Fall. Last time I fell apart with Captain, We're Sinking. To pick myself up I turn to The Wonder Years. People argue that they released the best pop-punk album of recent history with The Greatest Generation but I have always been a fan of Suburbia: I've Given You All And Now I'm Nothing.

Captain, We’re Sinking – “The Future Is Cancelled”

Music Sean Gonzalez October 25, 2014

A year ago when The Future Is Cancelled was first released it kicked and screamed with fury, depression and anxiety. It's an album that beckons to be yelled at and/or with, however one sees fit at that particular moment in time. It's an album blessed with raw emotion, channeling extreme sadness to utter despair and rarely leaving that frame of mind. The pounding drums and even more frustrated sounding vocals are just bits and pieces of this dismal and bitter album. This was my first experience with Captain, We're Sinking and the first impression never left me.

Wolves At Bay – “When I’m Dead” Review

Music Sean Gonzalez October 10, 2014

Wolves At Bay is a post-hardcore outfit from Connecticut that thrives off of releasing incredibly dark music. Anger, anxiety and depression are all within their music and are expelled with dismal melodies and vitriolic screams. Their new EP When I'm Dead uses the same formula

Pop Punk Sounds Best In The Fall

Music Sean Gonzalez October 7, 2014

There’s a change in the air. Life is beginning to seem brisk and stressful. The rays of the sun are diminishing across the globe. We can all feel it, and for whatever reason angst seems to come full force as the winter months approach. Welcome to the transitional season of Autumn; the season where I find Pop-punk provides the most comfort.

Self Defense Family – “Duets” Review

Music Sean Gonzalez October 2, 2014

Self Defense Family has released an EP of duets between Corrigan and lead vocalist, Patrick Kindlon. Duets is more an alternative country/folk EP and perhaps still as stunning. 'The Way Out Is Back' has impeccable instrumentation. The amount of guitars and their different melodies sonically is beautiful. Not to mention the light and approachable voice of Corrigan, with Kindlon's soft rasp.

No Bragging Rights – “The Concrete Flower” Review

Music Sean Gonzalez September 24, 2014

"LETS SING" is chanted and screamed in a rage of urgency as No Bragging Rights kick off their new album. The Concrete Flower begins with a song of desperation, but instead of getting down on themselves, vocalist Mike Perez is begging listeners to join him in singing songs about hope. This first track 'Strength Through Struggle' is as shocking as it is carnal, and that is just the first two minutes and 35 seconds.

Hostage Calm – “Die On Stage” Album Review

Music Sean Gonzalez September 15, 2014

Any gripes aside, the quintet is making pop (and I mean pop) punk their sound, and expand the influence on the new full length, Die On Stage. Immediately one can hear the melodies of both guitars resonating above an audible bass groove. The guitars actually have a perfect mix of distortion, instead of being liquid clear like two years ago.

Megaton Leviathan – “Past 21 And Beyond The Arctic Cell” Review

Music Sean Gonzalez September 12, 2014

Drone music is becoming more and more of a sub-genre in the metal world. Bands like Earth have been releasing the style for the entirety of their career. The added blend of post-rock has been favored by a few new black metal bands, almost entirely defining Post-Black Metal into the world. It's a style of calm, cleanly music gorgeously intertwined with ominous presences. The world of metal does not have to be ear shattering anymore, and that is exactly what an album like Past 21 And Beyond The Arctic Cell by Megaton Leviathan proves.

Henrietta – “The Trick Is Not Minding” Album Review

Music Sean Gonzalez August 26, 2014

If this is Henrietta not minding, I want to hear what they sound like when they do mind. Seriously, this LP is a glimpse at how powerful dynamics can leave an impact on one song, hell even ten songs. The Trick Is Not Minding is a tranquil delight, never overwhelming in the heaviness, yet shattering the mix with dynamics to give a 'heavy' feel. For an example, the bridge of '2000 Miles' builds and builds without ever needing to crank the distortion to build that unique weight and depth to the aggressive part.

Field Mouse – “Hold Still Life” Album Review

Music Sean Gonzalez July 24, 2014

Hold Still Life can be considered a debut album. While being the second album release under Field Mouse, it is the first one to feature all four members as one cohesive, full band. Twelve tracks are present on this record, combining fuzzy distortion, crystal clear melodies and soothing vocals. The album is being released by Topshelf Records and is due out July 22nd.

Dikembe – “Mediumship” Review

Music Sean Gonzalez July 24, 2014

A slow pulse kicks of Mediumship, the new album by Dikembe. A scratchy almost whispered voice weaves around the pulse, breaking up and down in a disheartened scale. 'Even Bother' eventually finds itself in a dynamic war between the somber melody and an even more subdued mood. That is the mood of this whole record, trying to battle that particular dynamic of keeping somber even under the thick weight of emotions.

EVERY TIME I DIE – “From Parts Unknown” LP Review

Music Sean Gonzalez July 1, 2014

In retrospect, as destructive as Keith Buckley makes himself out to be across these tracks, it is in his new vision of himself. Although he questions and fights himself often, I think we find inner peace by the end of the album. Whatever inner peace is, it comes equipped with a fire breathing vocal delivery more raw than the earlier days of Every Time I Die. His depth has increased, which gives light to a new range. Dynamically, the formula is all the same. What makes From Parts Unknown different from the other albums is the honesty and confidence. When 'Decayin' With The...
