Track Premiere: Sirius Blvck – “Hard2Find”

I first heard of Sirius Blvck when Near Mint Records’ owner, artist Corey Purvis, emailed me letting me know that his (mostly emo/indie) label would be signing a rapper. I’ve long known Corey as a big rap fan, and I respect his taste, but I was anxious as to what to expect. Making the move from releasing emo, punk, and indie rock artists, to signing rappers isn’t an easy transition, but it can work if you have the right artist to bridge that initial gap.
Sirius Blvck is just such an artist. Respected within the Indianapolis punk scene, but firmly entrenched in hip hop, Sirius’s music carries a blend of influences that we’ve seen more of in rap recently, combining some of the darker vibes and instrumentals of emo music and the mosh pit energy of hardcore, with the lyricism and structure of hip hop. This combination has become very successful and a variety of artists have sought to meld these elements in their own way (Princess Nokia, Wicca Phase, Rico Nasty, Trippie Redd).
What makes Sirius’s music stand out is how seamless these interwoven influences are, and of course his biting lyrics and flawless flow. He showed it on his first single, “new jacks”, from his upcoming album major threat over a punk rock bass line, and on “hard2find” he’s done it again, this time with a more traditional hiphop beat. Burning through a minimal instrumental from mathaius young, Sirius drops a powerful verse concluded with an entrancing hook. “Indica sativa collide, I can not decide. / Fighting off my demons tonight, so I’m hard to find.” The hazy nature of the track and the smooth flow, bring to mind The Underachievers and Zombie Juice of The Flatbush Zombies.
