Video Premiere: Wednesday — ‘Maura’

Posted: by The Editor

Since it dropped back in February, I’ve had I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone, the sophomore full length from Wednesday, on repeat. Made up of warbly shoegaze, searing guitars, and even the occasional flourish of lap steel, the Asheville-based quintet has already created a blissful melancholia all their own. It’s music that’s somber yet hopeful, the perfect escape for the current state of the world, echoing the feeling of trying to recall a happy memory before things got so bad.

Today we’re stoked to be premiering the music video for “Maura,” which was directed by guitarist and vocalist Karly Hartzman. The track finds the band at their most frenetic, barreling headfirst at a punch-drunk pace through dizzying waves of lo-fi goodness. It’s also a showcase for one of the album’s greatest strengths, the ways in which Hartzman’s delicate vocal lines seamlessly cut through the layers upon layers of distortion below them. The music video features a candid look at the band together on tour, as well a few clips of people roller skating which I’m proud to report is officially back, and after almost two months of social distancing, it’s comforting to watch a group of friends having fun with one another, the video reaffirming that the band’s almost instantaneous chemistry is a result of a group of friends that genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
