Track Review: Big Bliss –– “Tether”

Posted: by The Alt Editing Staff

Big Bliss has announced their 2023 outing with their sophomore effort, Vital Return, dropping August 12th through Good Eye Records. In the record’s lead-up, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock band is offering their newest single, “Tether.”

Silent since 2018 LP At Middle Distance, the trio’s return is a vulnerable yet captivating track that showcases Big Bliss’ potential in the indie-rock arena. The song tells the story of lead singer Tim Race’s recovery from addiction. It is based around the tether that addiction can have on one’s life as they wrestle those that love them throughout its cycle. This sense of tug-o-war is found in the instrumentation of “Tether” as its fuzzed-out, broody guitars and booming drums sit opposite of Tim’s steady tone and brilliant lyricism. There’s a sense of hopefulness that tinges the edges of the track, and it gives the song more complexity knowing that it swings from darker tones to brighter promises.

“Tether” is just one of the tracks off Big Bliss’ upcoming record that touches on sobriety. Much of the album documents central themes involving what Tim states is “addiction and subsequent snapshots of sobriety.” You can stream “Tether” now.

Vital Return is out August 12th on Good Eye Records.
