Track Premiere: Wyatt Smith — ‘Elated’

Prolific Bay Area musician Wyatt Smith has been steadily churning out reliable lo-fi indie rock over the past couple of years, most recently with 2019’s excellent Dead released via Citrus City. On March 13, Wyatt Smith is dropping a new album titled Maple via Open Door Records. The record, which was mixed by Smith’s longtime friend Melina Duterte (also known as Jay Som), is Smith’s best and most purposeful work to date, distilling all the ideas of their previous material into a singular and cohesive vision without tinkering with the things that make their music so special.

Today we’re premiering the lead single from Maple, the melancholic and serpentine album opener “Elated”. The track is a minimalist slowburn as elastic guitar lines swirl around a steady drumbeat while Smith’s anxious delivery gently nuzzles atop a blanket of jangly guitars. Smith described the song as: “I wrote this song reminiscing about when I was still living in the East Bay when I was around 19, I kind of romanticize my past as if those were my golden days. I was really just chasing happy feelings by making bad decisions and being reckless, which is what the lyrics are about.”
