Although the genetic makeup of Life Like, the debut full-length from Brooklyn’s Slight, is loaded with DNA from the Double Double Whammy family—members of LVL Up, Cende, Porches and Trace Mountains play on this project—it feels at home in the catalog of Rochester New York’s Dadstache Records. It’s a label that’s provided a nest for the old souls of modern indie rock; bands with the bite of the 2010’s, but with intentional influence from the Wilson’s and Dylan’s at the root of the genre’s current iteration. Though, whereas labelmates Total Yuppies, Comfy and Secret Pizza bask in Pet Sounds indebtedness, Slight channel the snappy drive of T. Rex on “Dark Mind,” the second single from Life Like. However, unlike another Marc Bolan interpreter like Ty Segall, Slight songwriter Jim Hill doesn’t shroud the mix in retro fuzz, instead opting for the sleek yet warm production of a Cende or LVL Up record. It’s a tasteful merging of the eras that avoids blatant nostalgia yet remains in comfortably familiar territory.
