Track Premiere: Petrov – “Outlier”

Charlotte, NC, is the new Philly. I’m pretty confident making a nonsense claim like that after hearing the latest Petrov single “Outlier.” The band’s debut EP, last year’s Sleep Year, was one of the best of a flood of excellent Charlotte-based indie releases. It oscillates on a dime between dance-y rock a la Bloc Party and heartfelt pop-punk like middle-era Somos, a refreshing blend in a time of wannabe Basements.

“Outlier,” which opens the band’s forthcoming Flower Bed EP, is a slightly grittier take on the Sleep Year sound. The production is a bit rougher, the song is a good deal faster than just about anything else they’ve done, and it’s got far more flair. This is aided in good part by Mary Grace McCusick’s vocal performance; she’s absolutely reaching for the sky on “Outlier.” It fits the song’s faster pace and gives it an energy that Sleep Year never aspired to. It’s a very promising new direction for one of the most promising young bands out there.

Flower Bed is out 10/23 via Self Aware Records
