Track Premiere: Fear Not Ourselves Alone – “Token”

Posted: by admin

Fear Not Ourselves Alone are back at it again with “Token,” the second track from their upcoming sophomore record GAY SHAME/WHITE FEELINGS. On this new track, the self-described void rock outfit from Queens, NY shows they’ve perfected the process to writing dynamic music that is simultaneously catchy and able to convey a powerful message.

“Token” opens with muted guitars and standalone vocals, but quickly soars into a sonic bloom of lo-fi distortion, driving drums, and guitar melodies so sweet they could rot your teeth. This sweetness, however, is ultimately fleeting and gradually gives way to a chaotic and borderline-sinister chord progression, which carries the song through to its completion.

Lyrically, “Token” touches on the intricacies of navigating day-to-day life through queer and latinx identities, with lines like “What’s your name? / What’s your race? / What’s between your legs and do you have a name for it?”  If you’re in the area, the band will be celebrating the release of GAY SHAME/WHITE FEELINGS tomorrow night with Lucky Cat, Foxtails, and HTML at Trans Pecos.
