The Alt Weekly Roundup

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format: albums, singles, videos, live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Amelia’s Best Friend – “Jumbotron”

Texas slowcore band Amelia’s Best Friend dropped their debut LP only a few months ago, but they’ve already come back swinging with the folksy new single “Jumbotron.” The song evokes the unassuming grandeur of the best Red House Painters and Carissa’s Wierd material.

Autumn Rhythm – Let It Be

Autumn Rhythm is nothing if not reliable; since 2022, the Long Island indie rock project has pumped out an album a year, and Let It Be is another stellar addition to the catalog. Packed wall to wall with sweet hooks, these tracks should immediately capture the hearts of fans of Joyce Manor, Oso Oso, or Liquid Mike.

Tiberius – “Felt”

Tiberius announced their upcoming Troubadour with “Sag” last month, and now they’ve followed it with the explosive “Felt.” It’s got some alt-country flourishes to dress it up, but at its heart it’s a rollicking indie rocker begging to tear down a dive bar roof.

Bleary Eyed – Easy

We’re clearly in a post-TAGABOW shoegaze landscape these days, and with their new LP Bleary Eyed has solidified themselves as the best band in that lane. While their earlier material, particularly 2023’s Bleary Eyed, hinted at their potential, Easy takes them to a new level, taking cues from psych rock, noise pop, dance music, ambient, straightforward electropop, and more without ever losing its own identity. They cover a tremendous amount of ground in just under 40 minutes, and every single song here is a hit.

Right on Target – “Sovereign of the Nile”

Right on Target’s demo tape from April was intriguing, and their first new song since is worth the hype. “Sovereign of the Nile” is brutal and unrelenting, three minutes of metalcore so heavy it feels all-encompassing, suffocating. The Surabaya five-piece are easily one of the genre’s most exciting new acts this year.

The Alternative’s ‘New Music Friday’ playlist

Each week we compile a playlist of songs our staff has been jamming. We post it on Fridays and then include it in each edition of the Weekly Roundup to make sure you don’t miss any of the great music we’re recommending.
