The Alt Weekly Roundup (6/3)

Posted: by The Editor

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Massie – “Lost Mary”

“Lost Mary” peels away all the gloss from Massie’s glistening pop rock to reveal the snarl underneath. It’s dirtier than anything off Grady Says Serotonin, but just as much fun.

Precocious Neophyte – Stony

Stony is the first new music since Precocious Neophyte’s excellent debut LP in ’22, and it’s another beautiful collection of airy, pulsing dream pop tracks. It’s out on Longinus Recordings, the same label that’s put out material from Parannoul and Asian Glow and the like, if that’s any indication of what Precocious Neophyte is doing here, although her music is a bit more grounded than either of those two.

Pale Sailor – “jorts season”

Pale Sailor’s second single “jorts season” is a classic emo-pop jam, bursting with mathy riffs and an understated but immediately hummable chorus.

Luby Sparks – Songs for the Daydreamers

Luby Sparks’ new Songs for the Daydreamers EP takes their swirling indie rock to new heights, with clanging drums and surging riffs on “NOT Okay” and a tender, pared-back cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ classic “Maps” to close things out.

brake run – lift hill soundtrack 2

With lift hill 2, the follow-up to brake hill’s debut EP from last May, they get even weirder with it. The Pittsburgh duo rework “valid” from their debut to be even louder and heavier, then follow it up with the instrumental “natural devotion 3,” which sounds like Aphex Twin by way of Draag. Closer “damsel” gets so unexpectedly loud at one point I thought my laptop was broken. It’s a great tape, and when brake run drops a full-length it’s going to rule.
