The Alt Weekly Roundup (6/1)

Posted: by The Editor

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Flight Mode – “Fossil Fuel”

Flight Mode’s debut single, “Fossil Fuel,” is one of the best emo songs of 2021. It’s bright and summery, only a step or two away from Oso Oso’s Yunahon Mixtape and, like that album, does an excellent job sounding both classic and fresh. It’s a great first taste of the Oslo, Norway, group’s debut EP TX ‘98.

Wishes on a Plane – Wishes on a Plane

German emo band Wishes on a Plane didn’t get the attention they deserved nearly two decades ago, but thankfully Time as a Color Records is working to rectify that. They’ve just given the group’s debut EP its first digital release, and it’s excellent. Fans of the early work of classic emo groups like The Promise Ring or Texas Is the Reason –– or more modern projects like Parting –– will find a lot to love.

Kurama /’redead / Thotcrime / The Queen Guillotined – 4 Ways to Die

4 Ways to Die is the next big sassy metalcore split to harken back to the good old days of Myspace metalcore (after SYSCB and If I Die First’s A Sure Disaster). Kurama,’redead, Thotcrime, and The Queen Guillotined each present a different take on the style, from Kurama’s chaotic “Snakes with Human Traits” to Thotcrime’s hyperpop-influenced offering. It’s a who’s who of the genre’s new class, and it couldn’t be a better sampler.

Sinwat – Sinwat

Sinwat moves with the steady cadence of falling rain, slowing winding through sparse indie rock songs with more focus on the journey than the destination. Sinwat’s debut LP rewards patience, for sure, but it’s a pretty and calming album in the lineage of Duster or Horse Jumper of Love.

Bigger Better Sun – “When I Need It Most”

The first taste of Bigger Better Sun’s upcoming Adjust to Wellness is the warm weather ready “When I Need It Most.” It’s a delightful, immediately catchy slice of powerpop that’s sure to be on constant loop this summer.
