The Alt Weekly Roundup (2/24)

Posted: by The Editor

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Ellis—”Embarrassing”

I said this last time Ellis dropped a new song, but she’s really outdone herself this time. Equal parts dream and pop, “Embarrassing” has the same light but somewhat eerie feel as the new Soccer Mommy singles, but less ‘90s.

Free Throw—Swig

Free Throw released two new tracks last week. “Motorcycle, No Motor?” is about depression’s ability to supersede one’s efforts to make progress, and “Tips Are Appreciated” details finding solace in the simplicity of companionship.

Snarls—”What’s It Take”

The new Snarls single, “What’s It Take,” is a lovely, crescendoing slice of what would’ve once been called emo, but now is (likely more accurately) just called indie rock. And it absolutely does rock.

Various Artists—Bernie Sanders 2020 Comp

The New Jersey tape label Baklava put together a really cool benefit compilation for Bernie Sanders. The 20-song project features many slowcore and downtrodden indie-rock acts like Horse Jumper of Love, Knifeplay and Joyer. But it’s also got a stark Grouper cover by Absinthe Father and a fucking awesome White Stripes cover by Sidney Gish. All proceeds go to the Bernard campaign.

Molly Drag—”Dealer”

Molly Drag never quits. The project’s latest single is the five-minute “Dealer,” a breathy slice of slowcore that feels as intimate as a secret whispered into your ear.

Gouge Away—”Consider”

“Consider,” Gouge Away’s coarse, gravelly new track, draws parallels between historical and present-day injustices and bigotry to conclude that they’re more similar than they should be. Compared to their last album, Burnt Sugar, the guitar tones on this are more suppressed.

The Alternative’s ‘New Music Friday’ playlist

Each week our editor Lindsy Carrasquillo compiles a playlist of songs our staff has been jamming. We’ll post it on Fridays on Twitter and then include it in each edition of the ‘Weekly Roundup’ to make sure you don’t miss all of the great music we’re recommending.
