Horsewhip – Consume and Burn
Almost everything written about Horsewhip mentions the members’ previous bands, all seminal hardcore groups. It makes sense, but you don’t need to know the history to appreciate how hard Consume and Burn rips. The third record from the Tampa Bay supergroup has enough echoes of previous projects to engage fans of their earlier projects, but it stands entirely on its own as some of the harshest, most furious metallic hardcore of the year.

Bully – “Right on Time”
Bully contributed a couple of songs to the soundtrack for AppleTV’s The Buccaneers, and “Right on Time” is the best. In classic Bully fashion, its hook is sugary while Alicia Bognanno’s vocals are all vinegar.

Instill – Reasons to Remember
Instill plays a type of vaguely melodic hardcore that, while done many times, is always needed for a vibrant scene. A demo from two years ago showed some promise, and in the interval, they have been a mainstay in the Chicago hardcore scene. A recent show where they opened for Taking Meds saw fans singing along to mainstays and a cover of Mindset, highlighting just how well-read the members are of hardcore staples. With Reasons to Remember, people outside the Chicago hardcore scene have something to glom onto, refining what Instill already competently did on the demo.

Momma / Narrow Head – Sunday / Medicine
Momma and Narrow Head are two of the leaders of the ‘90s-style alt rock boom of the past couple years, each building off a different aspect of the sound. To hear them cover each other feels perfectly natural. Momma’s take on “Sunday” from this year’s Moments of Clarity is bouncy and lucid, stripping back some of the noise—still getting a good bit woozier than they usually do—and Narrow Head plays “Medicine” pretty straight, showing that they can turn in a pretty damn good pop rock track when they want to.

Cloned Apparition – World Powered
Cloned Apparition’s two-track World Powered single follows their EP The Coming Spring from earlier this year, building off the debut’s crunchy, muscular alt rock sound. The Montréal foursome should appeal to fans of groups like Narrow Head or Money, especially the bludgeoning b-side “Holding the Knife.”
