Song Premiere: Paper Geese – “Cult Daddy”

Paper Geese is a hard band to pin down. Their previous iteration existed fairly comfortably within the emo-pop realm, but since they’ve regrouped and rebranded, they’ve been a little harder to categorize. 2019’s “Stay” was an off-kilter indie rock banger, and their six-minute sophistipop epic “Lavender Blue” dressed emo-pop up in strings, and “Summit” forayed into tense, buzzing post-punk. Each single to this point has had a unique vibe, and it’s made Paper Geese a really exciting new band to watch.
So it should be no surprise that “Cult Daddy” pulls in a different direction. How different it is, though, and how little it has in common with the band’s previously at least emo-leaning material, might be a shock. It’s a straight-up synthpop track, at times bordering on hyperpop. It’s great, though, and it shows off a side of the band, with a staccato almost rap-like vocal delivery. It’s a really wild one, and it cements the Jersey band as one of 2023’s freshest groups. The band says, “This song is for everyone who’s lost pieces of themselves to people who didn’t deserve it, or who feel irreparably damaged by cruelty. It’s time to take our power back. What started as just one beat in our drummer Andron’s massive idea library quickly accumulated layers and snowballed into one of our favorite songs. Creating this song was a new adventure for all of us and we’re excited to see where else Andron’s beats will take us. Thank you to Joshua Hayes & Johannes Lang for always exceeding our expectations in the mixing/mastering process!”
