Song Premiere: Least – “Alexandrite and Pearl”

Least’s 2021 EP Folding My Hands, Accepting Defeat felt like a revelation. It pulled influence from 2000s alt rock idols like Jimmy Eat World and Anberlin and made it all feel fresh. A exceptional debut, it should’ve topped year-end lists all across the internet. They kept the streak up last year, too, with the “Sitting in the Best Light” and “Power Blazer” singles wading into more aggressive territory, recalling maybe some Matchbook Romance or Hidden in Plain View. Like Folding My Hands, they throwback to the early 2000s in a way we rarely hear anymore, and Least delivers it so sincerely it can’t be anything other than a love letter.

The band’s latest single is the best of the three yet, and it goes toe-to-toe with anything off their debut. There’s a hint of Taking Back Sunday’s early poppy post-hardcore on “Alexandrite and Pearl,” especially in the song’s call-and-response verses. It’s fresh, crisp, nostalgic all at once. It’s a phenomenal track that plays to all of Least’s strengths. Give the single a listen below.

“Alexandrite and Pearl” will hit streaming services on February 2nd.
