Although Broken Hearts Are Blue have moved past emo, their 1997 debut LP The Truth About Love endures as an underappreciated classic of the genre. But don’t take it from me–take it from the legends in Braid, who covered the record’s opener “Because I Am” as the B-side of their 2015 Kids Get Grids single. The album got a remaster in December of last year by Matt Lynch, and the band has partnered with Poptek Records and Sweet Cheetah Records to drop The Truth About Love (2024 Remaster) both digitally and physically at the end of the month.

To celebrate, we’ve got an exclusive premiere of the remaster of one of my favorite tracks on the record, the propulsive “Last Night’s Tattoo.” It’s noticeably cleaner here than on the original release, allowing Ryan Gage’s rasp to breathe a little more and giving those guitars even more punch. Reflecting on the album, Gage noted that the band tried to mix “the high and the low, tailoring a sonic and literary perspective averse to genre that drew upon multiple influences, almost none of which were connected to mid-90s punk.” I’d say they did a damn fine job.

Listen to “Last Night’s Tattoo” below.

The Truth About Love (2024 Remaster) is out June 28th.
