Brainchild of guitarist/songwriter Avery Springer, Retirement Party, is one of the latest editions to the bumbling Chicago emo scene. The Alternative is thrilled to be premiering the first single off of their upcoming EP, Strictly Speaking. The EP will be out January 1st, via Tilde Records.

“Hall Beach” seamlessly marries quarter-life existentialism with dance-able upbeat emo. Feeling more like a soundtrack to daily life than a traditional emo cry of heartbreak, Springer’s voice is so matter of fact that it’s almost as if it’s a narration than a profession of emotion. It’s always a pleasant surprise to me when emo isn’t whiny, and Retirement Party is surely not whiny.
