Photography: FEST 16

Fest 16 ushered in the newest generation of DIY emo/punk. A kind that doesn’t fit the traditional sense of either of those genres, but follows the coattails of them. Many of these bands (a group that includes Just Friends, Mom Jeans, Grad Life, Prince Daddy, Save Face, and many more) are a really more a huge group of friends having fun, hanging out, and playing their music while they hype each other up. This is especially true during the FEST.
Coordinating around the parking lot hang out where most of the bands sleep, jokingly called “Shanty Town”, the 3 days they spent together at Fest were packed with incredible sets where members would join others on stage while others crowdsurfed and screamed along. Before and after every set the Shanty Town residents would meet up for a heavy chill. This tight-knit group sprouted some of the most memorable sets.
Sam Kless’s ability to hype-up the crowd during not only his own Just Friends set, but in P Daddy’s set alongside Zoe Allaire (Kississippi), and Churvel (Pictures of Vernon) showed just how much love and dedication they all have to creating a good time with one another and the fans who came out to bear witness. By the end of each night, it was back to Shanty Town, tired and loving.
