Djo Live in Boston with Post Animal
Posted: by The Alt Editing Staff
This past Friday we got to see Djo live in Boston. This long-awaited tour from the Stranger Things cast member Joe Keery is fully sold out, and there’s no better way to celebrate the middle of the tour than a home stop in Massachusetts! There is a bit of irony in Djo forming due to not wanting the pressure of touring with Post Animal and then becoming an even bigger success. That success is not without support for his former bandmates though, as Post Animal was welcomed to the opening slot on this tour.
In a world of jam band-esque artists endlessly riffing on stage, Post Animal proved they were in their own league. The charismatic members fused with their technical knowledge of how to play made those who were unfamiliar with their work give their full attention. The group began by pulling out their songs “Caving In,” “Gelatin Mode,” and “Setting Sun,” while the array of members fed off each other’s energy. While it’s unclear if Djo will be touring with Post Animal in the future, they’re making the most of it now while touring together and shared the stage once again for their final three songs. Included in this was their newly released “Last Goodbye.” We hope this is a sign of things to come!
By the time Djo came on, the entire GA crowd was meshing together as if they were long time friends. Everyone in the balcony packed in tightly against the railing to get the best view possible. People who dressed up in “indie sleaze” outfits made themselves known. The continuous flashing lights perfectly on beat with their live mixing had everyone’s adrenaline spiking. They wasted no time getting their 90-minute set moving with “Runner” and “Gloom” from DECIDE before diving into new tracks from the critically acclaimed follow up, The Crux. All 3500 of us in the sold out venue yelling back, “I think you’re scared of being basic.”
After an exhilarating 13 songs, everyone took a breather while frontman Joe Keery talked about his life growing up in Massachusetts. Somewhere in the crowd was a proud former music teacher who happily took them to Guitar Center in Danvers while they wreaked havoc on instruments they would never buy. All those experiences led him to taking music seriously and writing hits like “End of Beginning” that skyrocketed the project and was played moments after. The group gave us a parting gift of “Gap Tooth Smile” and “Potion” before exiting the stage. A roaring round of applause told them we wanted more and both Djo and Post Animal took to the stage to play “Flash Mountain” together before the house lights came on.
A second leg of the tour was announced for the fall for cities that did not get a stop this run. Buy your tickets HERE before it is too late!
