Album Review: Yeat – ‘Lyfestyle’

Posted: by The Alt Editing Staff

Despite Yeat’s effervescent origin as a meme songwriter, his hits continue to grace the audio tracks of TikTok hype videos and anime edits. With February’s 2093, Yeat brought us into his vision of the future: bleak, disrespectful, and ultimately very good music. On his new album, Yeat conveys the truth of his Lyfestyle, for better and for worse.

The beats from Lyfestyle are generally good, but they lack the originality of 2093‘s production, relying more heavily on over-produced trap beats than the interesting, dynamic rhythms that drove the previous album. Songs like “ORCHESTRATË,” “ELIMINATË,” and “FATË” echo Yeat’s thesis that his life is beyond what we mortals can comprehend: on “FATË,” we learn his success is partially due to a “alien” that “told [him] what to do” when he was younger. Even with this backstory, some of the less focused tracks suffer from repetitive patterns that diminish their replayability.

The features are generally passable: Lil Durk provides a decent verse on “Lyfestyle,” Don Toliver steals the show on “NEW HIGH,” Kodak Black… is on “BË QUIET.” Unlike the couple features present on 2093, these inclusions seem less necessary—almost as obligatory appearances rather than intentional features for a specific song or vibe. Either way, there is some wasted energy, and it is lacking when compared to previous projects.

Overall, there are some very good songs on the album: “FOREVER AGAIN” is a contemplative dance track; “FLYTROOP” is a classic Yeat brain-empty banger; “HEARD OF ME” is a memorable return to form for the shit-talking scion. However, especially given that this album comes on the heels of a fantastic, thematically-developed album like 2093, this seems like at least somewhat of a regression artistically. Yeat slowed his own momentum, and it manifests on Lyfestyle.
