5 Songs You Should Listen To:

Posted: by Ryan Manns

Alone on the train with nothing but old music again? It’s time for you to make some new sound friends, let me introduce you to some of my recent favorites.

‘Honeybee’ – Steam Powered Giraffe

Wow. I don’t usually go in for this type of sound but Steam Powered Giraffe is the exception. With the instrumental being made up almost entirely of one acoustic guitar and a very quiet bass, this song is carried entirely by the vocals. This soft, sweet tune reminds me of a barbershop quartet, and sounds like a classic, something quartets will be singing 100 years from now.

‘Nobody Speak’ – DJ Shadow ft Run The Jewels

Run the Jewels is back at it, this time with DJ Shadow. This old school beat is what exactly what I’ve been looking for to add to my gym playlist. The guitar hook is what defines this song for me, though the pushy, aggressive sound present in the rest of the track is also really addictive. Be careful listening to it on repeat though, you might want to start a fight.

‘Lone Digger’ – Caravan Palace

What is this? Swing step? To be entirely honest I’m not sure what to call it but I’m digging it. What really made me fall in love with this song was that sweet, sweet, baseline. Even if you ignore the rest of the gimmicks in this song it’s still a really cool, well put together piece of sound, that I think you should listen to.

‘Daft Pretty Boys’ – Bad Suns

I’m not really sure how I feel about this album as a whole Disappear Here, but “Daft Pretty Boys” is a standout hit for me. It reminds me of the sort of music Alt Nation used to play, along the line of “Trojans” And Young the Giant, with that high pitched catchy guitar and straight up weird vocals. This track is definitely catchy enough to merit a listen.

‘Funkle Phil’ – Bear Ghost

Aggressive and snappy this jam really gets me going. While the composition of this song is relatively simple, its energy is what makes this track a winner for me. Just a little bit drunken in its sound, “Funkle Phil” reminds me of a more refined version of The Wombats. Don’t take my word for it though, give it a listen and let me know what you think!
