Video Premiere: Delta Sleep – “Sofa Boy”

Posted: by admin

Delta Sleep are one of the most recent UK rock bands to come over to the US with huge success, but they are luckily not more of the same. Their mathy/emo/indie band sound makes for a great live show, and often a wild crowd, no matter which continent they end up on.

Today we’re premiering their new music video for their track “Sofa Boy” off their last EP, Younger Years, which was released last year via Big Scary Monsters. The video pulls from footage of their last US tour, as they are now about to head back for another long run. As an American I often wonder how others view our wacky country, and this footage from a touring bands’ perspective is really a nice little walk in another’s shoes. Not to mention the song rips.

Take a look at the video below, and then check out a note from the band about the track, their upcoming tour dates in UK, US, and South America.

Below is a message from the band, they discuss the reality of touring and the effect it can have on a persons mental health:
.
I think of my younger self a lot when we are on tour, and try to remind myself how lucky I am to be able to see the world with my friends off the back something we have created through (mostly) our own hard work and creativity. For the most part, being on tour is an incredible and exciting feeling – and when you eventually make transition from playing to 10 people in the corner of a dingy bar to playing to hundreds of adoring fans who have been genuinely touched by your music – it is the the most rewarding feeling and does actually seem like you are “living the dream”. But there are other sides of touring that often get overlooked when peering through that glossy lens of social media updates and bucket-list touring destinations. The fact that touring can have a lot of strain on an individual’s mental health.
.
The inspiration for Sofa Boy came about after I realized that I often reach a point(s) on a long tour where I start feeling very insular and lonely. Imagine being stuck in a van for weeks on end (and for most hours of the day and/or night) with the same group of people. We are lucky in Delta Sleep that we are all really good friends, but even then we still have our moments. It is inevitable when you constantly share such a confined space with the same people and that you have little to no breathing room and no option to jump out of the van to take a long walk to clear your mind. You find yourself deflated and not wanting to engage with anything. Becoming so irritated by them, where any little one of their mannerisms or habits can become the most noticeable and annoying thing in the world.
.
It’s a hard and tricky thing to put into words, let alone fully come to terms with. This is part of the reason why it can be such an isolating feeling when it does happen to you. It feels like no one understands, and that you are different to them because of that. You are NOT, you’re just experiencing things in a different way in that specific moment. It is just hard to realise this at the time. And this fleeting irritation coupled with lack of sleep and/or hangovers and/or the physical strain it requires to tour, I’m pretty sure could be the instigator to a lot band break ups.
.
I’ve come to imagine it like a massive rollercoaster ride but we are all sat in our own separate carts. We all take off together and share most of the same twists and turns together, but sometimes the tracks veer off and separate. One person might find themselves at a low vantage point while others are still riding high getting ready for their loop de loop. Those moments can feel discouraging, and you might feel left out. But it’s important to remember that eventually the tracks reconnect and that your turn for the loop de loop is just around the corner.
