The Alt Weekly Roundup (10/5)

Posted: by The Editor

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Sinai Vessel—”Guest In Your Life”

New Sinai Vessel has been a long time coming. “Guest in Your Life,” the first single from the project’s upcoming Ground Aswim, is more measured than anything on 2017’s Brokenlegged. It’s patient and, compared to that record, relatively sparse, but its simple adornments—the folksy slide guitar especially—give it a gravity their other work only hinted towards.

Savage Ga$p—”october’s lullaby” feat. glaive

The 15-year-old hyperpop artist glaive only started making music earlier this year, but he’s already breaking out of the 100 gecs-adjacent circle and landing features with more mainstream pop-rappers like Savage Ga$p. This new track dropped on Friday when glaive earned a cover endorsement from the Spotify Hyperpop playlist, and it’s a terrific little nugget of auto-tuned emo-pop  that sees glaive at his melodic best while Savage Ga$p just tries to keep up. If you’re looking for an entryway into this world kooky and colorful world of internet pop, this track will be your guide.

Touché Amoré—”Reminders”

The latest single from Touché Amoré’s upcoming Lament continues down the path carved out by some of the more melodic songs off their latest LP Stage Four. “Reminders,” while unabashedly still a hardcore song, is one of the catchiest tracks in the band’s catalog, proving that the band can pen an infectious chorus that still manages to tug at the heartstrings. It’s worth noting that the video is absolutely adorable, too, as it depicts members of other bands playing with their pets.

The Big Easy—”Alone / “Fake It Till I Make It”

The Big Easy’s double video for “Alone” and “Fake It Till I Make It” makes for a great introduction to the band’s heavy, brooding style of rock. The video contrasts frontperson Stephen Berthomieux’s ill-fated attempts to be cool during “Alone” against a more self-affirming approach over top of “Fake It Til I Make It.” Check it out and get excited for the group’s debut album, A Long Year, out October 23rd.

Romy—”Lifetime”

I’ve missed hearing Romy Madley Croft’s voice. Her work with the xx was wonderful, and “Lifetime” is a welcome addition to her solo catalog. It’s one of the most upbeat songs she’s ever lent her voice to, a bubbly synthpop song that shows off both her range and her ear for melody.

The Alternative’s ‘New Music Friday’ playlist

Each week our editor Lindsy Carrasquillo compiles a playlist of songs our staff has been jamming. We’ll post it on Fridays on Twitter and then include it in each edition of the ‘Weekly Roundup’ to make sure you don’t miss all of the great music we’re recommending.
