Gig Review: The Dodos at Johnny Brenda’s

Posted: by admin

Hello internet! I’m Giana Caliolo, you might [but most likely don’t] know me as Calicoco. When I’m not making music, I’m probably photographing. And more so now, I’m having a blast meshing these two beautiful worlds! I recently had the pleasure of photographing the Dodos at Johnny Brenda’s for a memorable set; they were on a short tour playing their captivating 2008 record Visiter from front to back.

Something hit me when I first heard the Dodos back when I was in high school. It was like, “OH SHIT! This is the perfect combination of melody and rhythm!” I grew up playing the drums as my first instrument and I think the intense rhythmic drive that the Dodos carry throughout their sound is what drew me to them instantly and what continues to inspire me.

Hearing Visiter live was better than I could have imagined. They had me and the whole room moving and singing along with them. Meric Long played with a bandaged hand that he had just gotten stitched up and he still ripped the slides in Paint The Rust like hell. Logan Kroeber played his old small kit set-up and drummed better than a machine as he so effortlessly does. Their chemistry is magnetic and it fills the room with emotion just as intense as their sound. It was truly a pleasure seeing these guys again. Here are some of my favorite shots from their set in Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda’s:
