The Alt Weekly Roundup (10/28)

Posted: by The Editor

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Equipment—”Wet Mulch”

A spoken “this is the one” and an acoustic pluck introduces the explosive new Equipment track, “Wet Mulch.” The Ohio four-piece dynamically explores a melody that runs parallel to the sound of both classically pop-punk acts like All Time Low (Nothing Personal era) and modern alt-rock groups like Mover Shaker. With rousing gang vocals, isolated group harmonies, soaring riffs, and charming vocals, it’s an anthem for anyone that’s all felt left behind in chaos.

Illuminati Hotties—”ppl plzr”

Illuminati Hotties shared “ppl plzr,” a whimsical, saccharine track about feeling inadequate compared to others. Proceeds for the track will be donated to the Trevor Project, an organization that provides a crisis hotline for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Andy Shauf—”Things I Do”

Andy Shauf made his long-awaited return last week with the announcement of  his new record, The Neon Skyline. The distinguished Canadian singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist plays a singular form of indie-rock that’s brisk, warm, and endlessly clever; for instance, this new album is a narrative telling of one night in a dive bar. His new single “Things I Do” is quick and snappy, a tale of trying to impress your loved one but backfiring and pissing them off instead.

Macseal—”Lucky for Some”

A quick, two-minute lament on what it’s like to be alone in a season where everyone seems so tangled up with each other, Macseal’s “Lucky for Some” is their final single from their upcoming LP (out 11/8). Delivered with a self-deprecating charm, the line “Good luck keeping your friends, nobody’s fallin’ for you” is brutally realistic for the phenomenon of picturing yourself alone in a room full of cozy couples this Winter.

100 gecs—”money machine (A.G. Cook Remix)”

The genre-defying pop duo 100 gecs put out one of the best albums of the year back in June, and now they’re gearing up to drop a remixed version of the record featuring producers both established and up-and-coming. The first single from that TBA lot is an A.G. Cook (owner of PC Music, one of Charli XCX’s main producers) revamp of gecs’ most popular track, “money machine.” The first half sees Cook squash the colorful intro lines under flattening bass before everything explodes into a blown-out drop.
