Split between Orange County and Berkeley California, the two members of Talk, Tired Thanatoid are coming together for their first tour in over a year. They will be heading up the West Coast just as their debut album, Sunflowers Bitter As Ocean Water, is being reissued on cassette through (my own) Pacific Nature Records and a new young label out of St. Louis, Fishbulb Records.
.

Sunflowers Bitter As Ocean Water fused math rock riffs and twinkly emo with pop sensibilities and anxiety filled lyricism. The album treads familiar ground as a coming of age meditation on moving away from home and trying to adapt to new phases of life. The album is a stuffed with catchy melodies and sing-a-long choruses that change tempo or time signature on a dime.

It’s fitting for this reissue to happen this summer, not only because of their west coast tour, but as the singer and guitarist Zackary Kiebach says: “So much of that album is about transitional periods, growing up, & growing out. I’m kind of in a similar place right now as I was when I wrote the album- preparing to be booted into the Real World™, in terms of leaving university life. Back then, I was soaking in a big pot of anxiety concerning the move out of my parent’s home and into an unfamiliar social environment. It feels like things are coming full circle.
